As Cuba has been warning over recent years, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) warned on Tuesday of the dangers of using bio-fuels.

According to a report released by this organization and which is partially published on Wednesday by Juventud Rebelde news daily, the production and subsidy of bio-fuels should be revised urgently in order to guarantee food security in the world.

Thus, FAO also calls for the protection of poor farmers, the promotion of rural development and guaranteeing environmental sustainability.

FAO General Director Jacques Diouf launched on Tuesday the new edition of the annual report of his organization “State of Food and Agriculture
2008”, which stresses the need to revise this alternative as a means to obtain energy and enumerates the dangers that it would cause, including the intensification of the current world food crisis.

Diouf criticized some countries’ policies that favour producers from developed nations to the detriment of their colleagues from underdeveloped countries.

The FAO report indicates that the production of bio-fuels tripled from 2000 to 2007 and the trend is expected to continue.
