CELAC-EU Summit Begins Focusing on Sustainable Development
The First Summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) and the European Union (EU) will open in this capital on Saturday, and will focus on promoting an alliance for sustainable development, with investments in social and environmental quality.

The First Summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) and the European Union (EU) will open in this capital on Saturday, and will focus on promoting an alliance for sustainable development, with investments in social and environmental quality.
After being beref of an institution for years, the Latin American and Caribbean region burst into the international arena with a single voice, representing its 33 independent countries.
The event precedes the First CELAC Summit, to be held on Sunday and Monday, and will issue a Political Declaration and an Action Plan, the latter containing the organization's goals on different topics for 2013.
The CELAC-EU summit will be held at a time when the uncertain economic situation in Europe contrasts with one of the highlights of Latin American and Caribbean countries, and this should contribute to a dialogue with greater symmetry, as some analysts predict.
The agenda to contribute to an alliance for sustainable development resulted from a series of consultations with many sectors and agencies from the two regions. They agreed that friendly investment with local communities, environment, labor laws and legal security are a driving force for the growth and development of societies.
According to Alicia Barcena, executive secretary of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), Europe needs to look at Latin America and the Caribbean with different eyes, because the region not only wants to be the market for European products, but also wants Europe to be a market for what this part of the world produces.
After the conclusion of the biregional forum on Sunday afternoon, the First CELAC Summit will begin. The organization faces challenges such as political harmonization at international forums, the economic crisis, climate change, poverty reduction and sustainable development.
Among the basic principles of the Latin American and Caribbean forum are not to replace existing integration mechanisms and promote the basic values of solidarity, diversity and complementarity.
During the first summit, Chile will hand over Cuba the pro tempore presidency of CELAC, whose agenda includes boosting integration, solidarity and regional peace.
At the end of the summit in Santiago, the troika of the bloc will be composed of Chile, Cuba and Costa Rica. The latter will lead the regional forum in 2014.
