Cuban Contribution Adds Medals to Argentina''s Sport

The persistent work of a Cuban coach who began with a group of children attracted to wrestling has already shown results for Argentina, which reaped six medals in the sport at the recent ODESUR Games.
When Erick Leon came to Buenos Aires around six years ago, the national wrestling team had been virtually dismantled through the retirement of its leading figures, and a lack of jobs to replace those who had bid farewell to competition.
Leon began to work with children of both sexes, from different parts of the country, and those children are now taking home medals from international tournaments.
At the recent South American multi-sport meet in Chile, Leon's students, who represent the country, won six medals: three silver and three bronze. And since 2011 are already obtaining medals in several competitions, told him to Prensa Latina.
Silver medalists were: Patricia Bermudez, 48 kilograms in women's wrestling, Yuri Maier, in the 97kg free, and Ivan Burtovoi in the 98kg greco, while the bronze were Luz Vazquez (63kg), Eluney Melita (53kg) and Laura García (69kg).
He said that today wrestling has greatly enhanced the level in Latin America, and that is due largely to Cuba's sports partnership, whose results are already noticeable, for example, in Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador and Brazil, where are working technicians of the island.
"That makes competitions more odds and with greater rigor", he said and noted that four of the six champions of divisions of women's wrestling, Pan American champions are from the region.
Leon stressed the care given to athletes at the National High Performance Center, both of the Ministry of Sports of the Nation, the Argentine Olympic Committee and the National Board of High Performance Sports.
This late organism was created in 2010 by the current government of President Cristina Fernandez to secure funding for the development of sports in Argentina.
Looking to the future, Leon currently working with 21 students expects its pupils conquer three medals in Toronto 2015, as in Guadalajara 2011 where Argentina took the podium at the Pan-American wrestling for the first time in more than 20 years.
