The Victoria de Girón Institute of Basic Medical Sciences, which trains highly skilled professionals of Medicine, will be declared National Monument on February 3, it was informed today.
The official declaration of this emblematic institution as National Monument says that besides its architectural beauty, this facvility has a rich historic tradition of effort and dedication of its professors, students and workers for over 50 years.
Located in an eclectic style building in Havana, the Victoria de Giron Institute of Basic Medical Sciences was founded in October, 1962, by the leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, to train massively revolutionary doctors and stomatologists to respnd to the mass exodus of professionals to the United States.
Belonging to the University of Medical Sciences of Havana, some 80,000 students from Cuba and 91 foreign countries have done studies in the careers of Medicine, Stiomatology, and degrees in Nursing, Hetlath Technology and Medical Psichology.
Historical events linked to the institution include the first internationalist mission to Algiers in 1963, including some of its professors.
