The National Association of Cuban Writers and Artists (UNEAC) and the Hermanos Saiz Association (AHS) have warned of the challenges the country''s culture is facing today, on the occasion of Cuban Culture Day.
In a message released for Cuban Culture Day, both organizations - which bring together the island's artists - stated that they were celebrating the date and warned of the challenges they face in a war of symbols promoted by U.S. leaders and their armed forces.
They also recalled the words of Cuban President, Raul Castro, when he said in a congratulation letter to the UNEAC, 'We are today doubly threatened in the field of culture by subversive projects that aim to divide us as well as by the global wave of colonization.'
Cuban culture 'has directly suffered attacks for more than five decades' and within a few days, the name of the island will again resound at the United Nations, when the whole world will condemn the U.S. blockade against Cuba, which remains in force despite progress in relations, the statement said.
On October 20th, 1868, Cuba enjoyed, for the first time, the sensation of freedom and proudly sang the National Anthem, says the text.
According to independence hero Jose Marti, that was 'the most beautiful and solemn hour of our country.'
The commemoration of this day coincides with other important dates related to the cultural work of the Revolution such as: the 55th anniversary of the Literacy Campaign, the speech 'Words to the Intellectuals' by Fidel Castro, the foundation of the UNEAC and the 30 year anniversary of the AHS.
