Cuba Modifies Method of Entering Higher Education
Cuba’s Higher Education Ministry (MES) announced on Wednesday changes in the entrance requirements for the upcoming academic year, as part of a strategy designed to raise the quality of university training.

Cuba’s Higher Education Ministry (MES) announced on Wednesday changes in the entrance requirements for the upcoming academic year, as part of a strategy designed to raise the quality of university training.
During a press conference, MES official Rene Sanchez said that the students wishing to have access to this educational level will be organized by way of a scale that will include the grades obtained in the previous level, and the grades obtained in the three entrance examinations. Starting from the next academic year, high school graduates will have to show their knowledge in three subjects common to all options: Cuban History, Spanish, and Mathematics, pointed out Sanchez.
These changes –he added- will require a better preparation on the part of youngsters, while they will also allow for a better quality in university classrooms since it will be indispensable to obtain over 60 points in each test.
Another peculiarity is referred to those benefiting from Order 18, Decree- Law 91, of the Ministry of Armed Forces (FAR); cadets from the Army and the Ministry of Interior; and Athletes for Physical Education, who will also have to pass the entrance examinations.
Higher Education Minister Miguel Diaz-Canel added that the students from the Vocational Pre-University Institutes of Pedagogical Sciences will have teaching degree courses as their only option.
The main objective of these changes is to raise quality and to give an answer to the territorial and global needs of society and the economy, underscored the Minister.
