Cuba is stepping up dengue control in October, a historically favorable month for the reproduction of Aedes Aegypti mosquito, the country's epidemiological authorities reported Monday.
Juan Ramon Vazquez, chief of the Anti-Vectorial Struggle, told "Miradas de Lunes" TV program that about 35,000 experts are working in the country to impede a new outbreak of dengue this month.
Vazquez stated that Havana and Santiago de Cuba are the country's most threatened cities. Water deficit obliges people to store it in ideal tanks, favorable for the reproduction of the mosquito.
Although the Public Health Ministry denied an alleged dengue epidemic, epidemiological authorities have insisted on maintaining preventive and control labors.
According to official information, about 43 cases of dengue have been reported this year in travelers arrived from abroad, so that the country has stepped up epidemiological surveillance at airports.
The Pan-American Health Organization has considered 2009 the year in which epidemic dengue has had more intensity in America, where the disease is reported in 35 countries.
Nearly 613,893 cases of dengue (11,601 hemorrhagic) and 211 deaths so far, have been registered until August 24.
