US actor Danny Glover granted an interview to a Cuban journalist when he spoke of the five Cuban antiterrorists unjustly incarcerated in the United States, his past as a civil rights activist and his latest movie.
Glover said that people around the world need to know about the Cuban Five, as they are known internationally, to mobilize them in the struggle for their freedom, and “justice will be served at last”
He also told the journalist about his three visits to one of the Five, Gerardo Hernandez, who is serving two life terms in US prisons after a biased trial in Miami; and how the Cuban hero is a source of inspiration for him.
“Every time I visit my brother Gerardo, I leave more inspired, not only infected by his desire for freedom but by the way he sees Cuba, which is the way Cuba should be seen around the world”
He added that Gerardo, despite the harsh sentence, keeps his spirit up, is constantly making questions and seems to be updated on what is going on everywhere.
“Our conversations last up to three hours” he said, and described the Cuban antiterrorist as “a very special man”.
The US actor recalled his years as a civil rights activist and announced the relase in Novemeber of his first movie as a director. He also spoke of the tragedies people are suffering in Africa, and the crisis the United States is going through, where “they are guaranteeing the survival of Wall Street but not of the people; where they do the impossible to keep war but not people’s lives”
Danny Glover, who is a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, received last Wednesday the Tomas Gutierrez Alea International Cinema Award at the venue of the Association of Cuban Writers and Artists (UNEAC) in Havana.
He is in the Cuban capital participating in the ongoing Meeting of Filmmakers of Africa, the Caribbean and their Diasporas, is a fervent friend of Cuba and an activist for the release of the five Cuban antiterrorists who remain unjustly imprisoned in the United States since 1998.
