The Cuban Coastguard Troops Directorate said that about 1,070 illegalities were detected from January 1 to August 31, 2012, compared to the same period last year.

In remarks to reporters, Lieutenant Colonel Ramon A. Ramirez noted that in many of these events, in which 1,094 citizens were identified, the coast guard acted in conjunction with the Fish Inspection provincial offices.

He added that 75 people were sanctioned according to Law Decree 194 (on the use of boats) and 464 people according to Law Decree 164 (on fishing violations), by the Fish Inspection Office, the high-ranking officer said.

The naval and land services seized fishing tackles, including 51,273 meters of net, 2,171 meters of trammel and 1,340 meters of long cord.

Also on the list were 1,820 meters of rowboat, 90 pots, 166 pairs of flippers, 137 snorkel, 289 masks and 166 fishing shotguns, he said.

Over 737.51 kilograms of chelonian (meat, more than 3,923 kilograms of lobsters and 2,782 kilograms of fish) were also confiscated, Ramirez said.

Some 429 gadgets (rustic naval means without motor that are not registered as boats), while 282 illegal spearfishings were seized, he said.

The Cuban Coastguard Troops Directorate also fights other illegal activities such as the poaching of hutias, crocodiles, turtles, and sand mining and illegal felling, which damage the country's flora and fauna.
