Raul Castro Heads Official Welcome for East Timor President
Cuban President Raul Castro presided over the official welcoming ceremony on Friday for his counterpart from East Timor, Jose Ramos Horta, at Havana's Revolution Palace.

Cuban President Raul Castro presided over the official welcoming ceremony on Friday for his counterpart from East Timor, Jose Ramos Horta, at Havana's Revolution Palace.
The Cuban Armed forces paid military honors to the Timorese Head of State. Both leaders greeted attending delegations, which included East Timor´s ambassadors to Cuba Egidio de Jesus and to the United Nations Nelson Santos, among other officials.
Attending the ceremony on the Cuban side were First Vice President Jose Ramon Machado Ventura; Health Minister Jose Ramon Balaguer and Foreign Minister Felipe Perez Roque. Following the ceremony, both Raul Castro and Jose Ramos Horta held official talks.
Prior to the ceremony, the Timorese Head of State laid a wreath at the monument of Cuban National Hero Jose arti, at the Revolution Square and toured its memorial.
Ramos Horta, Nobel Peace Laureate, arrived in Havana on Wednesday on an official visit that will conclude next September 9.
East Timor, with 14, 874 square kilometres and over one million inhabitants, is part of the South-eastern Asian region, along with Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
After achieving its total independence on May 20, 2002, Timor established diplomatic relations with Cuba. At present over 230 Cuban medical professionals are offering their services in that country, including teaching at the local university.
On the other hand, some 690 Timorese students are currently taking medicine courses in Cuba.
East Timor has condemned, at the UN, the over-45-year US economic, financial and commercial blockade of Cuba and in an expression of solidarity Timorese authorities donated the Cuban people 500, 000 dollars to help the ongoing recovery actions to clean the damage inflicted by hurricane Gustav.
