Cuban Students Back to School on Monday after Summer Vacations
Over 2,5 million students and 235, 943 teachers will head for their school rooms next Monday, September 1, to open the 2008-2009 school year in Cuba after having enjoyed their summer vacations.

Over 2,5 million students and 235, 943 teachers will head for their school rooms next Monday, September 1, to open the 2008-2009 school year in Cuba after having enjoyed their summer vacations.
Cuban Education Minister Ena Elsa Velazquez Cobiella told reporters the total number of teachers includes 32,000 young education professionals, who are also still in training. She noted that with a new policy to offer retired teachers the opportunity to return to the classrooms, 4,948 had so far decided to go back to teaching at both the elementary and junior high school levels, Granma daily reported.
The idea is to re-incorporate these teachers with a long experience into the education process; in junior high their main job will be to help train the young staff in the different subjects they teach.
As part of the necessary ongoing training of the educators, the minister explained that during the new school year, teachers will have eight hours a week for their own study as well as methodological sessions on Saturdays.
Velazquez also announced the opening of a new career of Educational Psychology, an important specialty to provide counseling for students.
The minister told the press that the basic school materials are ready for the students as well as the uniforms for the boarding school students throughout the country.
Velazquez said the greatest challenge has been for all students and teachers to have on day one of the school year the books, school supplies and other materials, provided with great effort by Cuba.
The official also informed that in preparation for the academic year, 702 schools were refurbished and work continues in another 1,081. She said 47 schools would not be opening their doors on Monday but that the students have been temporarily assigned to other schools and locales until the repair work is completed.
