HAVANA, Cuba, Sept 4 (acn) The first of four Russian planes carrying humanitarian aid for the Cuban people arrived in Havana on Thursday morning.

The donation was received at the Jose Marti International Airport in Havana by the head of the Civil Defense National General Staff, Division Gen. Ramon Pardo Guerra, and by the Russian ambassador in Cuba, Mikhail L. Kamynin.

Last Monday, Russian President Dmitri Medvedev entrusted the Ministry of Emergency Situations of his country with offering Cuba assistance to recover from the devastation caused by hurricane Gustav, which hit the Caribbean nation over the weekend destroying more than 86 thousand houses in the Isle of Youth Special Municipality and in Pinar del Rio province.

This first plane brought construction materials and tents to shelter people who lost their houses.
