Solidarity with Cuban 5 at Peruvian Parliament

Warm expressions of solidarity and affection will be offered today in the Peruvian capital to Irma Sehwerert, mother of one of the five Cuban antiterrorist fighters unjustly held captive in the United States.
Sehwerert will continue her contacts with Peruvian organizations and personalities, to publicize the case of her son, Rene Gonzalez, still captive in the United States despite having completed his 13 years in prison on October 7, 2011. The continued imprisonment of his four fellow Cubans, Gerardo Hernandez, Ramon Labañino, Fernando Gonzalez and Antonio Guerrero is also on the agenda.
Irma Sehwerert comprises a group of representatives from several Cuban sectors who have arrived in Peru to share many aspects of Cuban reality today.
She was received yesterday at the Congress by legislator Sergio Tejada, of the ruling bloc Gana Peru, who presented information on the case of the Five and the need to intensify the international pressure campaign so that U.S. President Barack Obama grants them a pardon.
The Cuban Five were detained on September 12, 1998, after alerting their country regarding terrorist actions developed by anti-Cuban extremist groups based in the U.S. city of Miami.
They were convicted in the city of Miami after an irregular and rigged trial and sentenced in 2001 to prison terms of up to two life sentences plus 15 years in prison.
