Members of political and social organizations thanked Cuba for its solidarity with Guatemala, a Central American country where Cuban doctors have performed more than 34 million consultations since 1998.
Restoring sight to patients through the Operation Miracle program and the scholarship opportunities provided to Guatemalans in Cuba were some of the examples mentioned at a meeting held in the capital with the president of the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples (ICAP), Kenia Serrano.
During the meeting, participants agreed on the need to demand the release of four Cuban anti-terrorist fighters unjustly condemned in the United States, and ask the government of that northern country to lift the economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed for more than 50 years against Cuba.
Serrano said that there are 342 committees in 104 countries fighting for the release of the Cuban Five, as Gerardo Hernandez, Ramon Labañino, Rene Gonzalez, Antonio Guerrero, and Fernando Gonzalez are known internationally.
Rene Gonzalez is the only one of the five now free in Havana, after completing his sentence and resigning his U.S. citizenship.
The also legislator thanked the members of the Guatemalan Coordinating Committee of Solidarity with Cuba and the Peoples for their work here over the years.
Cuba's ambassador in Guatemala, Roberto Blanco, and the diplomatic attache in charge of Consular Affairs, Yuliet Davil, attended the meeting held here at the Cuban embassy.
