Cuba: 55 Years of Social Justice, Says Russian Politician
Deputy Head of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation (CPRF), Ivan Melnikov, said that Cuba celebrates this year the 55th anniversary of the triumph of the Revolution after having overcome tough tests to preserve social justice.

Deputy Head of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation (CPRF), Ivan Melnikov, said that Cuba celebrates this year the 55th anniversary of the triumph of the Revolution after having overcome tough tests to preserve social justice.
In an interview with Pravda newspaper, Melnikov said that achieving the Cuban peoples full dignity was a main goal of National Hero Jose Marti, who inspired Cuba political leaders and more than half a century later he continues influencing the Revolution.
"Today, when we see that Cuba has kept the course it chose, this undoubtedly triggers respect and admiration, despite the tough reality," he said.
He cited complexities, including having started the construction of Socialism only 180 kilometers away from the United States, the heart of Capitalism.
Melnikov, who is Vice-President of the State Duma (Lower Chamber), also cited the economic difficulties suffered by the country in the wake of the collapse of Socialism and the demise of the Soviet Union in the early 90s.
Those were very difficult conditions, but 22 years later we can say that Cuba passed those tests with honor, he said, noting that for over half a century Washington has kept its aggressive policy against Cuba through a commercial, economic and financial blockade, which represents the main obstacle for the country development.
But in spite of reprisals, the "Isle of Freedom" maintains high human potential levels and defends the full rights of its citizens without exception, he said.
He cited the lowest infant mortality rate ever in Latin America (4.6 per every 1,000 live births) and the lowest maternal mortality (21.5 per every 100,000), one of the lowest worldwide.
