The evacuation of citizens and the preventive measures underway in this province were at the center of concern of Cuban President Raul Castro during a phone conversation today with the president of the Provincial Defense Council Miguel Acebo Cortiñas.

Raul sent greetings to the people of Sancti Spiritus as it was known during a meeting of the Provincial Defense Council today, which was presided over by Cuban Vice President Esteban Lazo. The Cuban VP stressed the need to maintain discipline in facing the effects of hurricane Ike.

Over 223, 000 citizens have been evacuated; the figure stands for nearly half of the local population of the province. Most evacuees went to the places of neighbours and relatives.

Some 13, 000 boarding students were returned home, and foreign and local tourists were taken to safe places in the face of the upcoming storm.

Hurricane Ike is expected to hit Cuban National territory in the next few hours and follow a track that has poses a danger to central and western territories, where preventive measures are already being taken.
