The office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights reiterated today that inmates held without charges on the prison installed by the United States in Guantanamo, Cuba, must be released as soon as possible.

Cecile Pouilly, representative of the said Geneva-based UN office, insisted on this demand in response to questions from journalists in that Swiss city.

Pouilly also demanded access to the judicial system be granted to detainees accused of serious crimes.

She said those people have been held for several years, waiting to be tried or to be given information about their state, and ratified the UN call to US authorities to assess the situation in that facility for its closing and also speed up the prisoners' access to justice and their release.
