Cuban President Raúl Castro received the last members of the delegation that represented Cuba at the 29th Olympic Games, which concluded Sunday in Beijing, China.
Proud of having represented Cuba with dignity at the summer event, the athletes who participated in track and field, baseball, boxing, volleyball, diving, canoeing and tae kwon do, arrived at Havana’s José Martí International Airport on Monday afternoon.
First to disembark from the plane were baseball runner-ups Pedro Luis Lazo and Alexei Bell, silver medallist boxer Emilio Correa, and decathlete Leonel Suárez, who carried the Cuban flag.
On behalf of the entire Cuban delegation, Bell read a message from the athletes upon their return to their country.
In Beijing —the best and most demanding Olympics of modern times— Cuba placed itself in the twenty-eighth position, and was fifth among Latin American nations with two gold, eleven silver, and eleven bronze medals.
China brought the world to a standstill for 16 days with the majesty and excellence of the games in terms of its organization, which winded up with the positioning of the hosts at the top of the awards table – a change of direction in the world of sports.
Also participating in the warm reception were Cuban Communist Party Politburo member Ramiro Valdés; Lázara Mercedes López, a member of the Secretariat of the Cuban Communist Party’s Central Committee; and Julio Martínez, the first secretary of the National Committee of the Young Communists League.
