Cuban President Raul Castro met on Thursday afternoon at Havana’s Convention Center with his Brazilian counterpart
Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who arrived in the Cuban capital yesterday for a visit aimed at expressing Brazil’s solidarity with the people and government of the Caribbean nation, following the damage inflicted on Cuba by the recent passage of hurricanes Gustav and Ike.
During their meeting, Lula da Silva was accompanied by Franklin de Souza Martins, Head of the Secretariat for Social Communication; Sports Minister Orlando Silva; Marco Aurelio de Almeida Garcia, Head Advisor of the President’s Special Advisory Team; and the Brazilian Ambassador to Cuba, Bernardo Pericas Neto; among others.
For his part, Raul Castro was accompanied by First VP Jose Ramon Machado Ventura; VP and Executive Secretary of the Council of Ministers Carlos Lage; Foreign Minister Felipe Perez Roque; Ricardo Cabrisas, VP of the Council of Ministers; and Yadira Garcia, Minister of the Basic Industry.
Brazil and Cuba established consular relations in 1906 and full diplomatic relations in 1943, with embassies in both countries. Such relations were broken by the Brazilian government in May 1964 and resumed June 26, 1986.
Since the re-establishment of full diplomatic relations, both countries have boosted bilateral exchange, which has been strengthened during the presidential term of Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who paid his latest official visit to Cuba last January and presided over the signing of significant agreements between both countries.
