Cuba will defend the spirit and principles adopted 20 years ago at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, during the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, official sources reported here.
Cuba will try to maintain the principles adopted in 1992, the Director of Environment of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment of Cuba, Orlando Rey, told Cuban television reporters.
A delegation of academics, NGO representatives and civil society institutions will participate in the conference (from June 20 to 22) and at the Summit of the People (from June 15 to 23), where agreements and documents will be negotiated.
We want to reopen the discussion on production and consumption patterns and ensure that it is addressed in the final document, said Rey, who said it is unfortunate that there is no sign of agreement on funding.
The important thing, he said, is to maintain the principles of historical responsibility, the right to development and to put mankind at the center of environmental concerns.
