The general secretary of the Spanish Communist Party, Jose Luis Centella, requested today his countrys government to claim the elimination of the so-called European Union (EU) common position on Cuba.
In a letter addressed to the president of the Spanish government, Mariano Rajoy, to which Prensa Latina had access, Centella described as unjust the EU policy, as it represents a situation of normality in the international relations.
At the same time, it is clearly prejudicial to the European interests in general and Spanish ones in particular, the document says.
The text recalls that the recent Summit of the Americas in the presence of Cuba was a recognition that Latin America and the Caribbean are experiencing a process that allow them confront the international relations from a joint prospect, above the different government systems.
It also adds that the Second Meeting of Heads of State of the EU and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States, to be run on June 10-11 in Brussels, is a magnificent opportunity to open a new stage between both regions, based on development from total independence and mutual respect.
Those who welcome the progress towards the normalization of relations between the United States and Cuba consider urgent that the EU reviews its common position, defined by the Cuban government as an interference and that, therefore, hinders relations.
When the United States begins to place its relations with Cuba in an atmosphere of normality, it is more ineludible that Spain flags the need to eliminate all difficulties for normal relations.
The letter requests Rajoy to state explicitly the elimination of the so-called common position, because Spain, and specifically former President Jose Maria Aznar, played a determinant role in the development of that policy.
