Under Fidel Castro’s leadership, the push for the release of the Cuban Five, who were unjustly imprisoned in the United States for years, transcended borders.Hundreds of thousands of people of goodwill, across the political spectrum, joined the cause and placed their trust in a prophecy uttered by Fidel that became a compass and guiding principle in the battle to bring them home: “I’ll tell you one thing. They will return!”
In 1972, in Manzanillo, a young poet wrote: In Quito, an old woman / almost a hundred years old / after seeing Fidel / embrace her beard, her smile / her heart full of the people /—a whole tremor / an incredible ember in her ashes— / told her grandson / that she could die now / that she was happy now / because she had seen / the man*.
The news, although predicted in recent years by scientists and political leaders, is alarming: Losses from natural disasters reached $100 billion during the first half of 2026, according to a study by the Swiss Re Institute.Among the major natural disasters analyzed are the earthquakes in Venezuela, Colombia, and Indonesia, which “are a stark reminder that earthquakes remain a constant risk for much of Latin America and the world, with the potential to devastate lives, communities, and local economies in an instant.”
