Oxfam Supports Cuban Sustainable Agriculture

The creation of more than 1,600 hectares under modernized irrigation system to face drought, is one of the results of the cooperation Oxfam maintains with Cuba for 20 years, according to a source of that entity.
Also during this period, Oxfam supported this island with 218 windmills, biogas digesters, and photovoltaic panels to promote renewable energy, the representative in Cuba of that international confederation from 17 organizations, Beat Smich, said.
In an interview with Prensa Latina, Smich stated that several dozens of projects totaling approximately 20 million dollars were implemented in that period.
Other contributions included the creation of 54 nurseries, urban organic vegetable farms, and intensive patios and orchards.
Cooperation is also expressed, among other objectives, in the repair of more than 200 trucks and tractors, and the provision of some 15,300 tools, and agricultural and manual implements.
Also, as a result of the projects implemented, more productive and service facilities were built and restored, which include mini-industries for canning production, an ice cream factory, a municipal hotel, and a workshop of bricks produced using traditional methods.
Oxfam has a close relationship with the National Association of Small Farmers, which has also supported gender activity undertaken by this organization, in local development and publication of documents on good agricultural practices.
Oxfam, which works in 92 countries, began cooperating with Cuba in 1993 at the request of the island's government and its support has been mainly in rural areas, particularly in the eastern region, often hit by the effects of climate change.
