Cuba and Venezuela denounced on Wednesday at the United Nations the fact that international and self-confessed errorist Luis Posada Carriles remains free in the United States and that Washington refuses to honor an extradition request presented by Venezuela.
According to Prensa Latina, the Cuban and Venezuelan ambassadors before the UN, Ileana Nuñez and Jorge Valero, respectively, brought up the case uring a debate on terrorism held Wednesday at the UN Security Council.
During her speech, Nuñez recalled that Posada Carriles was freed more han a year and a half ago and said that in June 2008 the Panamanian Supreme Court ruled a pardon he was granted in 2004 by then president Mireya Moscoso illegal and invalid.
The Cuban diplomat added that despite admissions from the US government that Posada Carriles is a dangerous terrorist, he was only accused of minor immigration crimes.
Nuñez noted that while a self-confessed terrorist like Posada is free, five Cubans who fought to prevent terrorism were arrested and they have been in prison for more than a decade. The diplomat said the Cuban Five – as they are internationally known - were only trying to obtain information on terrorist groups based in Miami to prevent acts of
violence and save the lives of Cuban and US citizens.
