Cubans across the island paid tribute to one of the most beloved fighters of the national liberation war, Camilo Cienfuegos, on the 49th anniversary of his death.
As is tradition, Cubans, including children gathered in groups to walk to the sea shore, sea walls or rivers to throw flowers for the revolutionary fighter, who died in a plane accident as he was flying to Havana from Camaguey after fulfilling a mission in that region.
The coastal waters of the municipality of Niquero, where the Granma Yacht landed in 1956 with Cienfuegos, Che Guevara, Fidel and Raul Castro among the expedition members, were filled with flowers.
The municipal band and former revolutionary combatants headed a march in Bayamo in honor of Cienfuegos, who took that city leading a guerrilla group in April 1958.
On the same year, Cienfuegos led the first squad of the Rebel Army that came down from the Sierra Maestra Mountains and one of the columns to seize the central provinces.
According to Argentinean revolutionary Ernesto Che Guevara, Camilo Cienfuegos was one of the most brilliant guerrilla fighters who fought to liberate Cuba from the pro-American tyranny of Fulgencio Batista.
