Zelaya: Int’l Community Should Step Up Measures against Coup Perpetrators

The constitutional president of Honduras, Manuel Zelaya, urged the international community on Tuesday to step up measures against the de facto regime of this Central American nation.
“The international community has played a key role in defense of the Honduran democracy but the de facto regime is still in power, even in defiance of the US administration,” Zelaya told Radio Habana Cuba in an interview aired during Tuesday’s Round Table radio and television program.
The Honduran president recalled that his compatriots continue protesting, making sacrifices and dying in the streets due to the brutal repression by the military.
Zelaya urged the White House to adopt economic measures against the illegal government led by Roberto Micheletti and he thanked the support and solidarity of the government of Brazil, which has welcomed him in the Brazilian embassy in Tegucigalpa.
Xiomara Castro de Zelaya, wife of the Honduran leader, announced that hundreds of people remain outside the Brazilian embassy, which is surrounded by military troops. She also said that three demonstrators have been killed and several have been wounded as a result of the military’s repression.
She also thanked the solidarity of the Cuban people in this difficult moment.
“We can not allow a small group of people to take control of the country causing fear, uncertainty, terror and death. We demand peace and the return to democracy and the constitutional order,” she added.
Journalist Randy Alonso announced that Brazil has asked for an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council to discuss the crisis in Honduras and the military siege of the Brazilian embassy in Tegucigalpa, where Zelaya remains.
