Tourists from different continents travel to the western end of Cuba to gaze at land and aquatic birds in Guanahacabibes peninsula, where some 200 species of birds live, specialists said today.
Accompanied by guides, tourists cover paths through the woods, searching for tocororo (bird symbol of the nation), partridge pigeons and little humming birds (small bird of hardly seven centimeters high), said Abel Rojas, specialist from Pinar del Rio National Park.
The territory, which has been declared Reserve of Biosphere, is considered one of the largest corridor of migratory birds in the Caribbean.
Most of the traveler birds come to the plain by Mississippi corridor to avoid the harsh conditions of winter.
Rojas said that generally the birds have small sizes and different colors, some of them bright, and although most of them live in the woods, they are also found in gardens and back yards.
In Guanahacabibes they occupy the whole territory since they temporarily live in woods, mangrove swamps and vegetation of the coast, they recover their strength there to continue the route of migration, said biologist Alina Perez.
Biodiversity of the peninsula, along with outstanding views of its beaches and crags, attracts the visit of scientists and those who love nature.
