The number of supporters, without political distinction, of the resolutions adopted by the Russian State Duma to demand the lifting of the blockade of the United States against Cuba increase, the vice president of that body, Ivan Melnikov, said today.
We, the Russian deputies, believe it is very important to ratify Russia's position regarding that politic issue and to support the Cuban people and government, Melnikov said to Prensa Latina, moments before the vote in the lower house of a declaration to demand the end of the economic, commercial and financial blockade against the island for more than half a century.
He said the Council of the Duma, at the request of the Committee on International Relations, resolved to adopt a resolution condemning the United States blockade and called on the United Nations and parliaments of other countries to again support the just demand of Cuba in the vote on the 28 October.
Is very important to make clear that the position of the Russian parliament remains the same in relation to the need to eliminate this unfair practice and continue the pressure on the United States by the international community, he stressed.
He denounced that unfortunately the policy of unilateral sanctions remains, and is extended in international relations, citing as an example, the retaliatory measures taken by the West against his country.
I am convinced that the resolution regarding Cuba will receive unanimously and friendly support in the Russian State Duma, Melnikov said.
During the Council meeting, the head of the Duma Sergei Naryshkin said that the legislative body approved earlier about 12 calls on the necessity of ending the economic blockade of Cuba, on the grounds that such United States actions are unilateral and contradict the UN Charter and norms of international law.
Naryshkin said that systematic policy of punishment also violates the basic rights of Cuban citizens, but noted that despite the difficulties, Cuba participates fully in all matters of international arena.
The parliamentary group of friendship with Cuba, which brings together all factions of the Duma, also spoke yesterday for the immediate release of three Cuban antiterrorist fighters still prisoners in jails in the United States since 1998, for preventing their country from subversive activities, forged in United States territory.
Gerardo Hernandez, Antonio Guerrero and Ramón Labañino serve heavy and unjust sentences, while their country fellows Fernando Gonzalez and Rene Gonzalez returned to the island after fully completing their sentences.
