Hurricane Ike left more than 200,000 houses damaged in Cuba, of them 30,000 totally destroyed, reported the President of the National Housing Institute, Victor Ramirez.
The Cuban official told ACN that this number could increase with the rain and wind still hitting the western region of Cuba.
In total more than 320,000 houses were affected by both Ike and Hurricane Gustav, which hit western Cuba only eight days earlier, said Ramirez. He noted that most of the homes had their roofs damaged and explained that they were not designed to support winds as strong as those generated by the two hurricanes.
As new strategies to prevent such destruction, Ramirez said analysis in underway on the use of more resistant materials for the roofs of houses located in sites that are more vulnerable to hurricanes.
In addition, the National Housing Institute will design a control and consultancy system to assist the people in building of their houses, since 70 percent of the population oversees the construction of their own homes.
The housing official said nobody will be left unprotected and that solutions will be implemented according to the characteristics of each place.
