Cuban Vice President Salvador Valdes urged Cuban workers to celebrate May 1st with high productivity in sectors such as sugar and food, informed today the media.
According to Trabajadores newspaper, Valdes, also member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party urged an additional effort to celebrate the International Workers' Day, which in Cuba becomes a giant and enthusiastic May Day parade mobilization
to support the revolutionary process.
Salvador Valdes Mesa, general secretary of the Cuban Workers Federation said that the promotion of the sugar harvest and the production of food are the two main tasks.
"This s an extraordinary activity for the Cubans in support to the Revolution. The mass mobilization must be rational and organized to demonstrate the strength and revolutionary enthusiasm" stated the until recently, general secretary of the Cuban Workers Federation (CTC), released from office when he was elected vice president of the Council of State.
Valdes spoke at a municipal CTC conference in the province of Villa Clara, where the issue of union membership was addressed, particularly of the Cubans enrolled in non-state forms of management, called here self-employment.
About 400.000 people are part of the private sector in over 180 activities, especially hiring people, food sales, passenger transportation and house rental..
According to data provided by the CTC, most self-employers are unionized, about which Valdés said, "We must consider their peculiarities, therefore, we must look for the most functional structure, so that the Revolution gets to the self-employers, and what they do has to be sustainable".
