Brazilian representatives of social movements, trade unions and political parties demanded today the release of the Cubans imprisoned in the U.S. for their efforts to prevent violent actions against Cuba.
The coordinator of the Committee Brasilia for the Cuban Five Release, Helio Doyle, talked about the violations committed against these fighters since their arrest in 1998 in Miami. He also stressed the severe sentenced imposed on them, including several life sentences, in a trial full of illegalities that vitiated the legal process.
Doyle said that Gerardo Hernandez, Antonio Guerrero, Ramón Labañino, Fernando Gonzalez and Rene Gonzalez are examples of courage and struggle for Latin American sovereign and freedom.
During the event, it was read a message from Rene Gonzalez, who was recently released after serving a 13-year sentence and currently asks for intensifying international campaign for the release of their fellows.
Each one of us must draw the attention of the White House to demand justice and secure the release of Gerardo, Antonio, Ramon and Fernando, he said.
The Cuban ambassador to Brazil, Carlos Zamora, highlighted the worth of these men who were jailed for preventing terrorist acts against Cuba; while perpetrators of heinous crimes such as the bombing of a Cubana airliner in 1976 that left 73 dead, live freely in Miami.
Zamora also welcomed the presence of a representative of the Cuban doctors who came to Brazil to contribute to improve Brazilian health care system.
