Cuban Province Hit by Ike Recovers 85 Percent of Electric Service
In the wake of Hurricane Ike’s September 10 pummeling of Cuba, power service recovery reached 85 percent in the eastern province of Holguin on Monday, though still 200 neighborhoods lack the service.

In the wake of Hurricane Ike’s September 10 pummeling of Cuba, power service recovery reached 85 percent in the eastern province of Holguin on Monday, though still 200 neighborhoods lack the service.
Banes, the most affected municipality in the province, has restored only 54 percent of its electric service, despite tremendous efforts by electric workers from Granma and Holguin.
Antilla, Gibara and Rafael Freyre were the other three municipalitiesseverely hit by Hurricane Ike, which affected all areas in the eastern province to various extents.
Carlos Gallegos, executive with the province's electric company, said that there are still 10,000 clients waiting for the restoration of service.
Gallegos added that the situation in Gibara is similar to Banes, with 53.3 percent of circuits already working and a similar amount of customers without service, especially in the complex agriculture area of Velasco.
There are 24 electric workers from central Sancti Spiritus working along with their Holguin counterparts to recovery the 13 kilovolt Aguas Claras-Velasco line.
The restoration levels in the rest of the province are: Rafael Freyre, 73.2 percent, Antilla, 96, and Frank Pais, Mayari, Calixto Garcia and Baguano, in the 79-81 percent range.
The other municipalities already achieved 90 percent restoration.
