The Venezuela-based Latin American and Caribbean Economic System announced on Tuesday that the organization will reject Washington’s sanctions against Cuba, including the Helms-Burton Law at its upcoming conference.
The Helms-Burton Law, named after its main promoters Jesse Helms y Dan Burton, was passed in 1996 under former US president William Clinton. It basically forbids American companies from trading with Cuba.
It is considered by many experts, governments and organizations as a violation to the human rights of the Cuban people, the US constitution and it also breaks several American laws.
The Latin American and Caribbean Economic System, made up of 26 member countries, will have its 34th ordinary session beginning November 25 through to the 27th. It will take place at the headquarters of the Permanent Secretariat of the organization, reported Prensa Latina news agency.
The organization is an intergovernmental system that emerged on October 17 1975 through the Panama Constituent Agreement with the aim of drawing up concrete strategies to boost cooperation and integration among the nations in the region.
