Cuba denounced at the World Trade Organization (WTO) that the U.S.-imposed blockade for over 50 years has hindered access to information and communications technologies.
The economic, trade and financial siege hampers the purchase and sale of those products and services on the global market, including electronic trade that is currently an important tool to support international economic relations.
Addressing a symposium on the 15th anniversary of the Information Technologies Agreement, the councellor of the Cuban mission in Geneva, Carlos Fidel Martin, called on participants to demand the U.S. government to end those coercitive measures against his country.
Those practices are contrary to international law and WTO rules, and have extraterritorial effects, Martin stated.
The Cuban representative also rejected the so-called plurilateral or more restricted initiatives as for the number of participants, which developed countries try to boost in face of the impasse of the Doha Round of talks.
Martin said that the negotiation modality in the WTO undermines the fundamental principles of the Multilateral Trading System.
