Cuba backed on Friday at the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) establishing a nuclear-weapon-free zone in the Middle East, an objective hindered by Israel's stance.
When delivering his speech at the Board, Cuban Representative Rodolfo Benitez underlined that Cuba's support to the initiative responds to its traditional commitment of a nuclear-weapon-free world.
However, Benitez warned that for establishing a nuclear-weapon-free zone, Israel must join the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT).
According to Benitez, Cuba backs the decision reached at the Eighth Review Conference of the NPT, which also includes a detailed plan of action to enforce Resolution 1995 on the Middle East by holding a Conference in 2012.
