Cuban Foreign Minister Felipe Perez Roque met on Tuesday with Mexican President Felipe Calderon during the third day of an official visit to this country.

According to Prensa Latina news agency, the meeting took place at Calderon’s official residence of ‘Los Pinos’ and it lasted more than 40 minutes.

A communiqué released by the press department of the President’s Office reports that Perez Roque handed Calderon an invitation from Cuban President Raul Castro to visit the Caribbean country.

The text notes that the Mexican leader and the Cuban FM spoke about the current state of bilateral relations and praised the positive steps taken in recent months regarding the work of mechanisms established by institutions from both countries.

The communiqué adds that Calderon expressed his confidence that a memorandum of understanding signed by the two countries to guarantee the safe, organized and legal migratory flow between Cuba and Mexico will contribute to discourage illegal migration.

Later in the day, in a meeting organized by Mexico’s Foreign Trade Business Council (COMCE), Perez Roque spoke with Mexican businesspeople about different ways to promote bilateral ties in the economic field.

For his part, Jaime Torres, head of the Cuba-Mexico Committee at the COMCE, said that this new era of bilateral relations opens more possibilities to increase Mexican exports to and investments in Cuba.

Also on Tuesday, Perez Roque met with other political leaders such as the President of the Partido Accion Nacional (National Action Party) – PAN -, German Martinez; and also with the executive board of the Mexican Senate headed by Gustavo Madero, President of this legislative body.

The Cuban FM thanked the Mexican Senate for their solidarity with Cuba after the devastation caused by hurricanes Gustav and Ike, for their support of the cause of five Cuban anti-terrorist fighters unjustly imprisoned in the United States and for their rejection of Washington’s economic blockade of Cuba.
